Beware of Scammers – Protect Yourself When Searching for a Maine Coon

Rule 1: Always Request a Live Video or FaceTime

This is the fastest way to confirm legitimacy. Scammers will come up with excuses to avoid live video and often ask for a deposit instead. If they can’t show you the kitten in real time, walk away. Reputable breeders are always happy to show their kittens live.

Too Good to Be True Pricing

While it’s tempting to jump at an offer of $300–$1,000, Maine Coons are a premium breed that require veterinary care, health testing, and responsible breeding. Typical prices range from $2,000 to $5,000+. Deep discounts are a major red flag.

Pages with "Rehoming" or "Adoption" in the Name

Be cautious of groups or pages using these terms. Scammers frequently create such groups to target unsuspecting buyers. If someone messages you from one of these pages, report and block them.

Common Scam Tactics to Watch For:

  • Poor grammar or broken English

  • Hesitant to share their location or ask for yours first

  • Cannot provide cattery registration or photos of the kitten’s parents

  • Ask for upfront fees for "paperwork"

  • Insist on small deposits to "hold" a kitten ($50–$150)

  • Offer free delivery with no verification

  • Share photos with inconsistent backgrounds (often stolen from others)

  • Avoid providing updated photos or video

  • Use emotional stories to pressure you into sending money

  • Message you unsolicited or comment offering kittens in others' posts
